IPTV on a Samsung or LG Smart TV: what works and how to set it up

A bright living room with a television on a low cabinet

The short version On a Samsung or LG TV you can’t install apps from outside the TV’s store, so you use a player that’s listed there, such as IBO Player Pro. Install it, note the MAC address and device key it shows, then add your StreamNovo M3U link or Xtream Codes login on the app’s website. Restart the app and your channels appear.

Watching IPTV straight from the TV, with no box and no extra remote, is the tidiest setup there is. Samsung and LG make it a little less obvious than a Fire TV Stick, because their TVs only run apps from their own stores. Once you know how the player apps get around that, it takes about fifteen minutes.

Check your TV first

Samsung Smart TVs run Tizen, and LG Smart TVs run webOS. Most models from 2018 onwards handle IPTV players well. Older or entry-level models often have little memory: they install the app, but take ages to load a large channel list.

A quick test: open the TV’s app store and search for the player. If it’s not listed for your model, or your TV is more than six or seven years old, a Fire TV Stick or an Android TV box plugged into an HDMI port will give you a better experience for very little money. Our Fire TV Stick guide covers that route.

Why the setup is different on a TV

On a phone or a Fire TV Stick, you type your login into the app itself. On Samsung and LG players, it usually works the other way round:

  1. The app shows a MAC address (a code that identifies your TV) and often a device key.
  2. You go to the app developer’s website, on your phone or computer, and enter those codes with your StreamNovo playlist.
  3. The TV app downloads your playlist the next time it starts.

It sounds roundabout, but it’s actually a relief: you paste a long link on a real keyboard instead of typing it letter by letter with a TV remote.

Step 1: Install the player from the TV’s store

Samsung: press the Home button, open Apps, then the search icon, and type the name of the player. LG: press the Home button, open the Apps store (called LG Content Store on older models), and search there.

Prefer video? Follow our walkthroughs for IPTV Smarters on a Samsung Smart TV and IBO Player Pro on an LG Smart TV.

We recommend IBO Player Pro on both brands. It’s stable, it handles live TV, movies and series, and it’s available on Samsung and LG in most countries. Other players are listed too; if you already know one you like, use it. Availability depends on your country and TV model.

Step 2: Write down the MAC address and device key

Open the app. The first screen shows the MAC address (something like a1:b2:c3:d4:e5:f6) and the device key. Take a photo of the screen with your phone: you’ll need both codes in the next step, and the photo saves you mistyping them.

Step 3: Add your StreamNovo playlist on the website

  1. On your phone or computer, open the official website of the player and look for the page to manage or upload a playlist.
  2. Enter the MAC address and the device key exactly as shown on the TV.
  3. Add your playlist. You can use either:
    • your M3U link, pasted in one piece, or
    • your Xtream Codes login: server URL, username and password.
  4. Give the playlist a name, such as “StreamNovo”, and save.

Both formats are in the email we sent you. If you wonder which to choose, this comparison explains the difference in two minutes. On a TV, Xtream Codes usually loads faster and fills in the TV guide by itself.

Step 4: Restart the app on the TV

Close the app completely and open it again. Your StreamNovo playlist appears in the list: select it and let the channels load. The first time can take a couple of minutes while the TV guide downloads.

About the player’s activation fee

Players like IBO Player Pro are made by independent developers, not by StreamNovo or by the TV maker. They usually offer a free trial period, then ask for an activation fee to keep using the app on that TV. That fee goes to the app developer and is separate from your StreamNovo plan. Check the current price on the player’s website before you rely on it.

Tips for a smooth picture on a Smart TV

  • Use the network cable if you can. Almost every Smart TV has an Ethernet port at the back, and a cable beats Wi-Fi every time for live TV. Even a basic port is fast enough for 4K streaming.
  • If you stay on Wi-Fi, use the 5 GHz network. It’s faster and less crowded than 2.4 GHz, as long as the router isn’t too far away.
  • Turn off the TV’s motion smoothing (Auto Motion Plus on Samsung, TruMotion on LG) for sports. It can make fast action look odd on live streams.
  • Restart the TV properly once in a while. Turning it off with the remote only puts it to sleep. Unplugging it for 30 seconds clears its memory.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install IPTV Smarters or TiviMate on my Samsung or LG TV?

TiviMate only exists for Android devices, so not on Samsung or LG. Some Smart TV versions of other players exist depending on the model and country: search the TV’s store to see what’s offered for yours.

I changed my plan. Do I need to redo everything?

No. If your login details stay the same, nothing changes. If we send you new ones, update the playlist on the player’s website and restart the app.

My TV isn’t on the list. What are my options?

Plug in a Fire TV Stick, an Android TV box or a Google TV dongle. They cost less than a year of most streaming apps and run every major IPTV player. Tell us your TV model and we’ll suggest the best option.
